I have a tc33 with 1600hrs. this winter it has not been starting when cold less than 30 degrees. Cant get it to start with stater fluid either. Now it won't start at all. How can you tell if it is gelling fuel? How can you test glow plugs?

Dant01,
Cold weather starting problems can be a real pain in the backside, but with a little maintenance most of those problems can quickly be resolved.
If you have even the smallest amount of moisture in your fuel, you'll have ice form on the fuel filter, or even in the injectors.
Water in the fuel is usually caused by condensation......rather than from someone pouring water in the tank, or from the fuel supplier. It's always best to keep the fuel tank full.
Keeping the fuel tank full will eliminate the air space above the fuel in the fuel tank. The air in the fuel tank contains a certain amount of moisture (humidity), which will condense to form water droplets when the temperature drops below the dew point. When the temperature drops below freezing, this water begins to freeze...plugging filters, injectors, fuel lines, etc.
You should at least replace the fuel filter, then add some diesel fuel anti-freeze..........but always keep your fuel tank full. Fill your fuel tank AFTER each use, rather than prior to each use.
I like to test the glow plugs with an infrared temp gun. It's super easy to do.
Record the temp of each glow plug prior to testing. Record the temps again after cycling. Cycle the glow plugs for about 30 seconds, then aim the temp gun at each one. You'll know within three seconds whether or not any are bad. Borrow a temp gun from a friend, if you don't have one of your own.
Stop in again if you still have problems.

Well i got it started.. i think it was a case of fuel gelling. I put some 911 additive in it. I think i had it flooded too. took a while. No it would not start with starter fluid only tried it a couple times. 20-1 compression I don't think that stuff is good for it made me very nerveous using it. Engine knocked when i was using it. Going to check glow plugs to make sure thats not my problem also. ....

Dant01,
If you're having problems with gelling, I might suggest that you add a bit of kerosene to your fuel. You won't have to add very much to prevent the gelling problems. In your part of the country, you should be able to get by with a 10% kerosene mixture. That should be good to about 0 degrees.
Here in North Dakota, we switch over to #1 Diesel in November.
#1 Diesel contains a 50/50 mixture of #2 diesel and kerosene. The kerosene thins the fuel, preventing gelling problems to about -30 degrees.
#2 Diesel produces more power. #1 Diesel produces less power and more heat. Power is usually something we compact tractor owners aren't willing to give up, but the trade-off is a tractor that will reliably start and run in very cold temperatures.
Glad to hear that you're up and running again.
